Imagine your favorite fairy tale as a child: the looming castles, vast forests, lush countrysides, colorful houses, hidden caves, gorgeous lakes and calming waterfalls. Now close your eyes and make a wish upon a star. If your wish was to come true, you’d be transported to Luxembourg! This tiny European country (nestled between France, Germany and Belgium) has enough old-world charm and storybook quality to span more than a few lifetimes, and might be the closest you’ll get to the magical world Walt Disney & Co. created way back when.
If you’re lucky, you’ll be visiting Lux in July for the Bluesjazzrallye, a jazz festival held in the heart of its historic Old Town (pictured below), or at the end of summer, when The Schuerberfouer is in full swing. The biggest funfair in the country, the month-long event is also the oldest Luxembourgish tradition still celebrated today. Guests can expect an exciting mix of culture, rides, and for all you foodies out there: gastronomy.
But not to worry if you can’t make the festival or fair; there’s plenty more to see and do in the country named Europe’s Capital of Culture in 2007. Revel in the magnificence that is Vianden Castle, “one of the largest and most beautiful feudal residences of the romanesque and gothic periods in Europe” (Castle Vianden). If castles aren’t your thing, explore the caves and waterfalls of Petite Suisse, get a glipse of Kasematten (the tunnels built under the city in ancient times, used for escape when under attack), visit the country’s Mousel District to peruse the vineyards, sip some wine and get your oenophile on, or simply enjoy the array of amazing restaurants, pubs and café’s in Old Town, or the tiny capital, Luxembourg City.
If you’re looking for an action-packed holiday, this quaint, friendly country with a population of only 469,000 may not be the place for you. But if you’re up to relax, spend some time in a charming environment admiring rich, enveloping history and picturesque landscapes, Luxembourg must be added to your shortlist of destinations! Happy Travels! —VJ
